WHAT WILL -by David Sullivan 2005
So, I find myself in between the storms -
One Ive weathered and one I'm eyeing;
One Ive survived and one I'm hoping to.
Are these the storms that create who we are?
Or are these the storms that we create?
Lives Ive saved or lives i will take -
Through my telescope of decision
I confiscate the breath of men.
Is this my calling? Is this my life?
Will the sand savor my blood?
Or will men lose theirs by my hand?
What will be left if the ground tastes my life?
My father weeps from the passing of his own;
Minds thought it out of order
For the seed to wither before the tree.
The wife who never met her husband...
Will she weep the day the sun turns red?
Will my children who were never born rise to heaven?
My mother will be, on that day, one who has no son.
Will she miss, on Mother's Day, a card from no man.
My sisters have no brother because I fight.
A young man has lost his uncle.
When they weep, will this flash by their eyes?
Will I have time for them to flash through mine?
Will all the hardships and wrongdoings bombard my last breath?
Or will I suffocate with ease to the memories that last?
My heart will fade, But with visions of life or death?
Will the words of my father teach me one last lesson,
Or, will I be taken up still pondering the answers?
At the instant of losing 21 grams, will I be in a state of confusion?
Or will I know the destination of my soul?
Will the speed of the life catch up to me in the hurricane we call war?
Or will time pass me by without looking back?
Do the words I speak and the thought I think ring throughout eternity?
Or does this battle range to captivate me?
From the time i open my eyes before the dawn
Till i rest them at night, am I living?
When the ground tastes my blood, is my life a life lost?
Or just a body disappeared?
My work on earth brings lif3 and death.
Will I succumb to another with the same goals?
A war must be waged and a fight must be fought.
The words of my history are spelled by my hand.
You can't change the past that was once our future
But you can change the future that will be our past.
"This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave" ~Elmer Davis
